Moving files from the PDP-11* to the Osprey/PC

The Osprey environment offers two tools to the installer to simplify the process of moving the user's disk files from the PDP-11 to the Osprey/PC. The first is the BackPlane Extender Kit, available for either Q-bus (BE/Q) or Unibus* (BE/U) backplanes. The second is a disk copy utility called DISKCOPY.

The steps involved in performing the file movement are as follows:

• Install an Osprey/Q or Osprey/U card set in the PC.
• Create a PDP-11 disk image on the Osprey/PC hard disk using the Osprey utility CONTAINR. This disk image will be a PC container file.
• Remove the PDP-11 processor/memory board and replace it with the Backplane Extender board.
• Connect the Extender Board cables to the Osprey/Q or Osprey/U Bus Adapter half of the two-card set.
• Boot MS/DOS, and in the Osprey disk directory, run DISKCOPY. Follow the instructions specifying which PDP-11 disk is to be copied to which Osprey/PC container file.
• When the PDP-11 boot file has been copied to an Osprey/PC container file, the Osprey can be booted from the container file. Boot the Osprey and proceed copying PDP-11 files to the Osprey/PC container file using the PDP-11 operating system utilities until all files you need have been moved to the new system.
