Using a KEY file to upgrade an Osprey
Osprey boards are configured at Strobe Data for various features. If you are purchasing a new Osprey, you should specify all the features you want at the time of the purchase and your board will come ready to use. If you decide later to upgrade a board , we will ship you a diskette with a KEY file on it. These directions will let you upgrade your Osprey.
Two upgrades are describe here.
The second one, involving Osprey/NT, involves more steps. These directions are targeted towards that upgrade.
There are three distinct Osprey boards. The Osprey with a DCJ11, the Osprey/ISA, and the Osprey/PCI. The Osprey with a DCJ11 has a DEC* DCJ11 CPU on it. The CPU is a large (about 2" by 1") white chip. The Osprey/PCI is designed for the PCI backplane. The Osprey/ISA i s designed for the ISA backplane, and does not have the DEC CPU on it. You must know which type of board you have, because upgrading each board is slightly different.
Follow these steps to upgrade your Osprey to use the new KEY file.
Determine the board serial number.
Purchase new features for the board.
Field upgrade Osprey/ISA boards
Copy the KEY file for Osprey boards with a DCJ11 or Windows/NT based upgrades
New features can be enabled for any existing Osprey board. When you purchase new features, you must specify which board serial number you are upgrading.
If you are running Osprey/DOS, determine the board serial number by going to the C:\OSPREY directory and running the HWDIAG program. The program will display the board serial number as a string of eight hexadecimal digits. E.g. 01B9055B.
If you are already running Osprey/NT, determine the board serial number by clicking Start \ Programs \ Osprey \ Diagnose board hardware (low level). The program will display the serial number about eight lines into the report.
Read board serial number............... 01B9055B
Purchase new features for the board
Issue a purchase order which indicates the new features for your board serial number. If you would like the key file sent to you via email, please include your email address. You must include your board serial number.

You will receive a KEY file for your Osprey board.
Field upgrade Osprey/ISA boards
Skip this step if you have an Osprey with a DCJ11 or an Osprey/PCI. Proceed to installing Windows/NT. It is not possible to physically upgrade an Osprey with a DCJ11. You must keep the KEY file in the same directory with the other Osprey programs.
Copy the KEY file to your Osprey directory. Run the program called KEYPROM. Your Osprey/DX is now permanently upgraded to the new features. You will no longer need the KEY file. If you are not going to run Osprey/NT, you are done with the upgrade.
If you already have NT and Osprey/NT installed, proceed to copying the KEY file.
Follow Microsoft's instructions for installing Windows/NT
Download the Osprey/NT installation program from the Osprey area of http://www.strobedata.com/.
Run the installation program and follow the directions.
Copy the KEY file for Osprey boards with a DCJ11 or Windows/NT based upgrades
You may skip this step if you have an Osprey/ISA which has been enabled for the new features. You may not skip this step if you are upgrading while running Windows/NT.
Copy the KEY file to the directory where you installed your Osprey software.
If you are running Osprey/DOS, this is probably C:\OSPREY
If you are running Osprey/NT, this is probably "C:\Program Files\Strobe Data\Osprey"
You may skip this step if you already performed the field upgrade on your Osprey/ISA. You must skip this step if you have an Osprey with a DCJ11.
You must have already copied the KEY file
Click Start \ Programs \ Osprey \ Burn EEPROM from KEYFILE.
If you are running Osprey/DOS, go to the C:\Osprey area and run HWDIAG.
If you are running Osprey/NT, click Start \ Programs \ Osprey \ Diagnose System (high level)
Make sure that your features are all listed in the "Read board features" area of the diagnostic.
